The construction of passenger terminal 2 of Noi Bai international airport- one of the most important transport infrastructure projects being implemented with Japan’s ODA, has been kicked off on December 4.

The terminal 2 is a 4-storied international passenger terminal building with floor area of approximately 139,216 m2, fully equipped with electro-mechanical and other facilities, handling 10 million passengers annually. With a total investment of nearly 70 billions Yen (around 900 million USD), it is expected to complete within 34 months.

In March 2010, JICA concluded the first loan agreement with the amount of 12.6 billions JPY and further loans will be provided in accordance with the progress of the project.

Addressing at the ground-breaking event, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai praised relevant ministries, project owners, and contractors for their best preparations for the construction, saying that it has already been designed to provide high-quality services, smooth passenger flow, future scope for expansion, and enhanced security, guaranteeing commercial success.

Air traffic in the airport exceeded the capacity of Terminal 1 in 2007 and is continuing rapid increase as Vietnam’s economy has been keeping its remarkable growth rate. Since Noi Bai airport is the only international gateway serving the capital city, construction of Terminal 2 is one of the highest priority projects of Vietnam.

“Upon the completion, Noi Bai terminal 2 will be the new international entrance of Hanoi city and Vietnam. I believe that together with Noi Bai – Nhat Tan expressway and Nhat Tan bridge, this new gateway of Hanoi will be recognized as a brilliant symbol of the friendship between Vietnam and Japan”, said Mr. Motonori Tsuno, JICA Chief representative in Vietnam.

In the airport sector, JICA supported the construction of new international terminal of Tan Son Nhat airport in Ho Chi Minh City, which was completed in 2007. Following Tan Son Nhat and Noi Bai airports, JICA is currently carrying out feasibility study of the Long Thanh new airport development project, for which co-operation was agreed between the two Governments on November this year./.
